Gifted and Talented/International Baccalaureate Academy

Gifted & Talented/International Baccalaureate Academy

Welcome to Elgin High School. Here, we search for more—asking questions, challenging assumptions, and driving innovation through creativity. We refuse to settle for “just enough.” Our IB Programme builds on the knowledge students bring, empowering them to think critically, explore boldly, and grow through meaningful discourse. We are committed to preparing learners for a future in motion while fostering a community that learns from one another’s perspectives. Challenging learners to create a peaceful world.

We have some exciting updates to the academy course offerings for your student(s) since we have fully implemented the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. Beginning with the Class of 2027, our current sophomores, all EHS Academy students will be engaging in IB courses for their core academics. The EHS Academy has always been the home of advanced academics at the secondary level, and this is our final step in the implementation of the IB Diploma Programme. All EHS Academy students will have the opportunity to decide whether to pursue the Full IB Diploma or to remain a course candidate, but the key changes to their core academics are listed in the PDF document below.

In the spring of 2023, Elgin High School became one of a few high schools outside the city of Chicago to become an authorized International Baccalaureate Diploma Program school. This designation speaks to the high-level of educational programming provided through Elgin High School's academy, as well as to the rich experiences provided to our students both within and beyond our classroom walls.

Academy students of the graduating class of 2025 and after, will take honors-level AP classes in their freshman and sophomore years, and will then transition into our International Baccalaureate Diploma Program course offerings. Academy students may select how many, and which IB courses they would like to enroll in, but must enroll in at least two IB courses to maintain their Academy membership.

For further information about the IB and its program, please visit the Elgin High School Academy site and the International Baccalaureate Organization site.
