Freshman Success @ EHS
FRESHMAN SUCCESS
Our Goal
EHS strives to have each 9th-grade student become the best version of themselves by providing a wide range of academic and social-emotional support. When students feel good about themselves, it is easier for them to be engaged in school, make friends, participate in extracurricular activities, and stay on-track on their path to graduation. We believe that ALL students can be successful at EHS.
What does it mean to be a Freshman on-track?
A Freshman"On-track" means a student who is performing in a way (Academics / Behavior) that will allow he/she to graduate within four years. Below are the areas that have the most impact on freshman success.
Academics
-
Students who pass all their classes in 9th grade are very likely to graduate HS (especially those who get A's and B's).
-
Those who fail one or more classes are at risk of never graduating.
-
9th grade performance is a better predictor of who eventually will graduate from HS than 8th grade test scores, or any other background.
-
Drops in GPA (related to performance) are a predictor of HS graduation and college graduation.
-
B average as a GPA will have a 50% chance of earning a 4-year degree or being successful at another choice in a post-secondary learning, such as a vocational trade school programs.
Attendance
- 9th grade is not more difficult. It just requires more academic effort.
Academic Effort Means:
-
Attending Classes Every Day
-
Paying Attention in Classes
-
Participating in Class
-
Completing Homework
-
Asking for Help When Needed
-
Studying
-
Less adult monitoring at school makes it possible for students to reduce effort.
Staff Academic Support Includes but is Not Limited to:
-
Clear Explanations
-
Regular Updates on Progress and opportunities for reassessment, when appropriate
-
Help with specific academic problems
- Engaging the correct wrap-around services such as developing a 504 plan, IEP, or other individualized support needed to support the "whole child" as they work towards their goal
